Shadow Minister for Communications Manager of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives

WARWICK SMITH M.R

21 December 1992

UNTIMED LOCAL CALLS REMAIN

Warwick Smith, Opposition Spokesman for Communications, today totally rejected Mr Keating's claim that timed local calls would result from the privatisation of AOTC.

"Mr Keating knows that all residential customers who currently have access to untimed local calls will continue to have that access under the new Telecommunications Act. The Act was supported by the Coalition. There is no intention to reverse our

commitment to untimed local calls." (See Sections 72,73 attached)

Mr Smith said the Prime Minister was scare-mongering yet again in an effort to distract attention from his Government's appalling economic record and its failure to address the real issues.

"There is no intention and there is no need to move away from the untimed telephone call system that is part of the telephone system in this country. To say otherwise is a nonsense." (From interview with Graham World, ABC, 21 December)
