j;~ u MEDIA RELEASE WARWICK SMITH M.P. Shadow Minister for Communications

25 March 1992

THE AUSTRALIAN PRINT MEDIA INDUSTRY

Today the Select Committee on the Print Media released its report in Federal Parliament at 10am titled "News & Fair Facts”.

The Coalition dissented on several aspects of the report.

The Coalition objected fundamentally to the fact that this report was commenced to satisfy an internal ALP factional problem.

On the substance of the report which contains a very

comprehensive and useful overview of the major issues in the Print Media industry, w.e recorded some specific objections to the recommendations:

1. Cross-media rule for radio; 2. Foreign investment; 3. Future research role for Bureau of Transport and

Communications Economics; and 4. Changes to Trade Practices legislation to establish a new regime of mandatory notification, stricter competition test and an administrative public interest test.

The Dissenting report is attached.
