Peter Reith

DEPUTY LEADER of the OPPOSITION PRE S S RELEASE SHADOW TREASURER

TAX REFORM CAMPAIGN

The Federal Coalition is stepping up its campaign to sell its tax reform policy to the Australian people with the formation of a Tax Reform Campaign Group.

The new campaign group, to be chaired by Shadow Treasurer, Mr Peter Reith, will focus attention on taxation all the way to the next election.

The GST Campaign Management Group will be made up of the shadow Treasurer, Mr Reith, the Shadow Minister for Trade, Mr Alexander Downer, the Shadow Minister for Tourism and Aviation, Mr David Jull, the Shadow Minister for Science and Technology, Mr Peter McGauran, as well as the Member for McEwan, Mrs Fran Bailey, Victorian Senator, Mr Rod Kemp, and New South Wales Senator, Michael Baume.

In the day-to-day running of the campaign group Mr Reith will be supported by Mr Downer and full-time staff within Mr Reith's office in Canberra.

Mr Reith said the formation of the Tax Reform Campaign Group reinforces the Coalition's commitment to genuine taxation reform, and its determination to campaign strongly on the issue at the next election.

"If Bob Hawke wants a fight over taxation we are more than happy to give him one.

"Australians should confront the need for radical tax reform.

"While Bob Hawke fills in cross-word puzzles, the Coalition has the courage to confront the major issues for this country.

"Australia's tax system is among the worst in the developed world.

"We believe the abolition of the existing, anomaly-ridden sales tax is a first step to unshackling this country.

"And we are going to confront that issue face-to-face.

"Everyone in Australia needs to know that our tax system robs people of the incentive that is needed to get Australia moving.

"If Bob Hawke thinks that he's going to be able to hold onto

power simply by keeping people in the dark and running a scare campaign about tax reform then he's wrong.

"The Coalition is determined that by the time people vote in the next election they will know exactly how much the Hawke

Government secretly rips them off via the wholesale sales tax.

"People are going to find out that there's a tax of 10, 20, and even 30 per cent on every day items in every aisle of every

supermarket in this country.

"People are going to find out that the wholesale sales tax

already favours the rich.

"People are going to find out that tax cheats who are allowed to avoid their responsibilities cost this country billions of dollars every year.

"People are going to find out that Bob Hawke and Paul Keating have increased the revenue collected under the table through the wholesale sales tax from around $3 Billion a year to a massive $10.6 billion.

"We remain committed to abolishing sales tax, cutting personal income tax, introducing a goods and services tax, reforming capital gains tax, simplifying the Tax Act and other changes that will make our taxation system fairer and more efficient.

"This Tax Reform Campaign Group will be explaining the issues involved to the electorate."
