Media Release David dull, Shadow Minister for Tourism & Aviation

ISSUED: 13 November 1991

The Federal Opposition welcomed today's announcement of the go- ahead for Sydney's third runway.

"After years of delay the Government has finally bitten the bullet," said David Jull*, Shadow Minister for Tourism and Aviation.

"All Australians will be delighted the Government has rejected the arguments of the vocal minority opposed to this important project. To think that we have all been held to ransom for so long is outrageous.

"I challenge those Labor MPs opposed to the runway to accept the decision or have the courage of their convictions and resign.

"Higher Education Minister, Mr Baldwin, and the Prime Minister's Parliamentary Secretary, Mr Price, should follow Mr Punch's example and resign from their positions if they want to continue to oppose the runway.

"They have spent the last 2 1/2 years drumming up opposition to the project while valuable time has been lost. They should now accept the umpire's decision," David Jull said.

"While I applaud the decision I despair that it has taken the Labor Government over 8 years to act. It should not be forgotten that one of the first acts of the Hawke Government in 1983 was to halt the project.

"It's taken 8 years for common sense to win the day.

"This project will be of immense value to Sydney and Australia. In particular, the growing tourism industry will be one of the big winners. -"Thousands of jobs will be created directly by the project. At the same time it will contribute to employment opportunities in

the tourism industry for many years."

David Jull warned that this decision should not be seen as a way to avoid considering the future of Badgerys Creek.

"Badgerys Creek will be needed early next century. Clearly, we can't afford another ten year delay before any action is taken.

"If Sydney's airport needs are to be met Badgerys Creek must proceed as well. It is not a substitute for the Kings ford Smith project but a vital part of our aviation infrastructure.

"The Government must make the decisions now about how this can be best achieved."
