NEWS RELEASE GOVERNMENT'S OUTRAGEOUS DECISION TO SUPPRESS UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES

Today's unannounced decision to withhold release of the weekly DSS figures for Unemployment Beneficiaries and Job Search Allowees is an act of political cowardice.

It is easy to see why the Government is running scared. The

latest ABS seasonally adjusted estimate of unemployed persons stands at 648,000 or 8.2% of the workforce - the highest since October 1983.

The level of UB and JSA recipients is currently more than

523.000, already well in excess of the Budget estimate of

475.000.

But it is outrageous that the Government should react to this stark evidence of its gross economic mismanagement by such blatant censorship.

Will it next decide that even monthly figures are Lou sensitive, too embarrassing a reminder of the dishonesty of its callous pre election "soft landing" promises?

Instead of wringing his hands and urging school leavers to stay at school the Prime Minister ought to be prepared to address the implications of this massive waste of human talent instead of trying to sweep the evidence under the carpet,
