Richard Alston Liberal Senator for Victoria

NEWS RELEASE SHADOW MINISTER FOR SOCIAL SECURITY

RICHARDSON CLEAN BOWLED

The transcript of Senator Richardson's total ignorance and sheer indifference on the matter of the massive rise in the numbers of Youth Homeless Allowance recipients he graphically displayed today in "answer" to my question to him in Question Time is attached.

On this evidence, one can only wonder if Senator Richardson has ever heard of the Youth Homeless Allowance.

Par further comment: contacts Senator Richard Alston on [06] 277 3605.

SENATOR ALSTON TO SENATOR RICHARDSON

CAN THE MINISTER CONFIRM THAT SOON TO BE RELEASED FIGURES FROM

HIS DEPARTMENT SHOW THAT THE NUMBER OF YOUNG AUSTRALIANS

RECEIVING THE YOUTH HOMELESS ALLOWANCE HAS INCREASED BY A MASSIVE

72% OVER THE YEAR TO FEBRUARY. DOES THE MINISTER ACKNOWLEDGE

THAT SUCH A DRAMATIC RISE IN THE NUMBER OF YOUNG AUSTRALIANS

BEING THROWN ONTO THE STREET AND FORCED TO SURVIVE IN THE YOUTH

HOMELESS ALLOWANCE IS A DIRECT RESULT OF HIS GOVERNMENT'S

ECONOMIC MISMANAGEMENT - AND WHAT URGENT ACTION DOES THE

GOVERNMENT INTEND TO TAKE TO AMELIORATE THIS TRAGIC SITUATION?

SENATOR RICHARDSON:

THE TRUTH IS , I THINK, THAT IN THE FIGURES THAT ARE ABOUT TO BE

RELEASED, SENATOR ALSTON, THEY SHOW A SLIGHT REDUCTION, I THINK,

IN TEENAGE UNEMPLOYMENT WHICH RUNS CONTRARY TO THE TREND IN

UNEMPLOYMENT NATIONALLY. SO I THINK YOU'RE WRONG AGAIN BUT I

THINK WE'RE GETTING ACCUSTOMED TO YOU BEING WRONG AND WHEN THE

FIGURES COME OUT I WILL BE VERY VERY TO COMMENT ON THEM.

SENATOR ALSTON:

I DON'T KNOW IF ITS IGNORANCE OR A WILFUL REFUSAL TO LISTEN BUT

MY QUESTION WAS DIRECTED TO THE NUMBERS OF THOSE IN RECEIPT OF

THE YOUTH HOMELESS ALLOWANCE, NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUTH

UNEMPLOYMENT - AND I'D INVITE THE MINISTER TO PICK UP THE RIGHT

BRIEFING NOTE THIS TIME.

SENATOR RICHARDSON:

I JUST WISH I COULD PICK UP A BRIEFING NOTE, WHY NOT? YOU'RE ON

HERE, YOU'RE TALKING TO ME ABOUT YOUTH AND UNEMPLOYED YOUTH AND

Φ

YOUR CONCERN. I WANT TO SAY, MR PRESIDENT, TO SENATOR ALSTON,

HE OUGHT TO REMEMBER THE LINE OF HIS COLLEAGUE, PETER REITH, AND

I QUOTE, "THE BOTTOM LINE IS WE'RE SAYING TO PEOPLE, LOOK, YOU

CAN'T LEAVE SCHOOL GO ON THE DOLE AND STAY THERE UNTIL YOU'RE

READY FOR THE AGE PENSION.

SENATOR ALSTON:

NOW, POINT OF ORDER, MR PRESIDENT, THIS SEEMS LIKE A PATHETIC

ATTEMPT TO AVOID ANSWERING THE QUESTION WHICH RELATES TO YOUTH

HOMELESS ALLOWANCE. COULD I INVITE YOU TO DIRECT THE MINISTER

THAT IT IS A VERY SIMPLE QUESTION AND IT DESERVES A VERY SIMPLE

AND STRAIGHT FORWARD ANSWER.

PRESIDENT:

ORDER, THE MINISTER SHALL ANSWER THE QUESTION

SENATOR RICHARDSON:

THANK YOU, MR PRESIDENT, I CAN ONLY SAY THAT IF I WAS YOUNG IN

THIS COUNTRY AND I WAS UNEMPLOYED OR I WAS HOMELESS, I WOULDN'T

BE LOOKING TO PETER REITH OR TO JOHN HEWSON WHO SUGGESTED THEY

SHOULD LIVE BY THEIR OWN MEANS - AND I CERTAINLY, SENATOR ALSTON,

WOULDN'T BE LOOKING TO YOU. BUT WHEN, MR PRESIDENT, THOSE

FIGURES ARE RELEASED, I'LL BE HAPPY TO COMMENT ON THEM.
