SHADOW MINISTER FOR SOCIAL SECURITY

NEWS RELEASE 1000 Australians a Day Join the Dole Queues in May

Today's unemployment figures showing a fall in the official unemployment rate present only a false dawn.

The participation rate fell significantly with 46,300 people disappearing from the workforce. Had the participation rate remained the same, unemployment would still be at 9.9%. Not only that, but the number of Australians in jobs also fell.

The unemployment benefits figures for May - also released today - show more of the true story.

The number of Australians thrown onto the dole queues has risen by another 31,088 to 647,414 in May - a rate which is in excess of 1000 a day, and setting a new reward for numbers on the dole.

The Social Security UB data suggests that increasingly,

Australians are giving up searching for work but are still receiving unemployment benefits.

Even with all this pathos and depression, all the current

Government can offer jobless Australians is the on-going Keating- Hawke soap opera, and all we have heard out of Senator Richardson is the promise of still more multi-national all-expenses-paid junkets to Europe, courtesy of the long abused taxpayer.
