Senator Grant Tambling Shadow Minister for Regional Development, External Territories and Northern Australia

Media Release

The Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Northern Australia, Senator Bob Collins, has been challenged to address the major issues facing northern Australia at a seminar in Darwin next week.

The challenge came from the Shadow Minister for Regional

Development, External Territories and Northern Australia, Senator Grant Tambling, today.

Senator Tambling called on Senator Collins to clarify*

1. How the dramatic disappearance of the $8 billion forecast Budget surplus would impact on northern Australia; 2. Why Senator Collins had failed to meet his original targets in waterfront reform; 3. How much longer the people of remote Australia would be forced

to suffer as a result of the government-induced recession, and 4. Why the ALP uranium committee, including Senator Collins, had avoided tabling its report.

"Given the Minister's failure to influence government policy in these important portfolio areas particularly in the recent Industry Statement, I ask why he has chosen to speak at a seminar in Darwin on March 19 on the topic "The Role of a Commonwealth Minister in Relation to Public Sector Financial Affairs,"

"Does he intend addressing each of the issues I have raised or will he instead announce his resignation, promised for May 6 this year?"
