Senator Grant Tambling Shadow Minister for Regional Development, External Territories and Northern Australia

Media Release DO YOU HAVE A GUILTY CONSCIENCE, WARREN?

The Australian Electoral Commission must explain

inconsistencies in the 1987 election returns of NT Federal Member, Warren Snowdon.

Senator Grant Tambling today called on the AEC to explain why Mr Snowdon had lodged different versions of the return in Darwin and Canberra.

"Inconsistencies between the two returns need to be addressed urgently. I also call on the AEC to confirm whether all disclosable donations were fully detailed."

Senator Tambling challenged Mr Snowdon to clarify details of his 1987 returns, ahead of the Australian Electoral Commission report and any new federal legislation.

"The legislation now before Federal Parliament scrambles the egg because it mixes a ban on political advertising with disclosure. The Federal Government must divorce these two principles into separate pieces of legislation."

Senator Tambling said he did not support the ban on political advertising because it would adversely affect electors, particularly those in remote and Aboriginal communities.

"My colleagues and I in the Federal Coalition support legislation for the disclosure of political donations, provided it is fair and equitable to all Parties."

Senator Tambling called on Mr Snowdon to explain how the disclosure legislation and taxation provisions would apply to union donations and Labor Party funds received from bodies such as John Curtin House Limited and ALP Legacies and Gifts Limited." (1990 = $750,000).

"I would like to see a system whereby union members can direct their union donations to the political party of their choice, not just the ALP.

"Snowdon's paranoia about links between the CLP and business ignore the record of 16 years' successful government and pioneering businesses which create jobs and wealth."
