Mr David Hill Managing Director Australian Broadcasting Corporation PO Box 9994

Dear Mr Hill,

I have noted that a former ABC staff residence (8 Beatrice Street, Stuart Park) was sold at public auction in Darwin on Saturday, 27 July 1991 for $155,000. I have been informed that the same property was sold by the ABC to a staff member in April 1991 for less than $100,000.

As the Darwin real estate market has been very static for the past four months I find a 50% capital gain incomprehensible and in need of explanation by the Corporation.

Can you please advise: 1. Details of the original sale, and the basis of agreed policy parameters determined or approved by the Federal Government;

2. Involvement of the ABC staff member owning the property in setting the rules relating to property sales and/or exemption of residential criteria; 3. How many other staff homes have been sold at "discounted rates" in the past two years?

I am aware that the ABC has continually used the excuse that a lack of resources hampers essential community programming. I am amazed that the disposal of property in the current

economic climate, under conditions which attract market profits, calls into question the basis of the ABC Sales Scheme.

Yours sincerely,

JRANT TAMBLING 'SENATOR FOR THE NORTHERN TERRITORY 29 July 1991
