PRIME MINISTER'S ADVISERS THREATEN HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF JOBS

Hundreds of thousands of workers will be added to the unemployed lists if the Prime Minister accepts the latest recommendations of his advisory groups, the Federal Member for Bruce and Shadow Minister for Privatisation, Julian Beale, said today.

The nine advisory groups were set up by the Prime Minister earlier this year to inquire into Ecologically Sustainable Development.

The nine BSD advisory groups to the Prime Minister have now made reports which have crushing consequences for unemployment in Australia.

Amongst the recommendations of members of the BSD advisory groups are:

. a carbon tax of up to 40 percent on power stations . steeply increased fuel taxes . environmental taxes . capital gains taxes on family homes

The carbon tax on electricity generation would wipe out the partly Victorian Government owned aluminium smelter at Portland.

The carbon tax would also make any further development of the Loy Yang power stations hopelessly uneconomic: Privatisation is the real answer to the development of Loy Yang.

The carbon and fuel taxes would add thousands of dollars to the annual bills of Australian families.

Now that the BSD groups have issued their interim reports the Prime Minister must declare his position.

The Prime Minister must state that he will not accept proposals which will put hundreds of thousands more out of work.

The real answer to inefficiencies in power generation is privatisation not new taxes and levies.
