TELECOM TO LOSE 3 0 , 0 0 0 JOBS UNLESS PRIVATISED

Telecom stands to lose 30,000 more employees over the next three years unless it is privatised the Federal Member for Bruce and Shadow Minister for Privatisation, Julian Beale, said today.

Information provided to Telecom management warns of drastic unemployment problems unless huge strides are made in increasing efficiency and productivity.

These improvements are impossible while outmoded work practices are maintained by the powerful Telecom unions.

The loss of 30,000 jobs would be a further severe blow to the economy of Melbourne, where Telecom (presently) has it

headquarters.

Only privatisation will give Telecom management the freedom from political control needed to introduce productivity increases.

The Labor government is unable to deal with the

telecommunications unions because of factional battles effecting the Federal leadership.

Privatisation would also allow Telecom to raise the capital needed to compete with a new telecommunications company operating in Australia.

The Coalition Parties intend to privatise Telecom in stages and offering shares to its employees will be a priority.
