------ Media-0 OF AUSTRALIA INDUSTRYGOVERNMENT MOST INTERVENE OH LIVE SHEEP TRADEThe Federal Government must accept its national responsibility for overseeing and advancing our international trade, and to directly intervene in the latest rejection of live sheep to the United Arab Emirates. According to Acting Federal National Party Leader and Shadow Minister for Primary Industry, Bruce Lloyd.Mr Lloyd said the shipment is the same one rejected recently by Saudi Arabia and the industry believed another buyer had been found. He said currently that Australia was in a strong position with Saudi Arabia and Gulf Co-operation States, for the Prime Minister to take control of the problem."The Federal Opposition has been more than tolerant of the failure of Minister Evans and Kerin and Blewett to protect a $300 million industry and the welfare of hundreds of thousands of sheep affected by indiscriminate and illogical rejections.Mr Lloyd said the Coalition Parties had presented a bi-partisan and moderate stance with the Government, the Australian Meat and Livestock Corporation and the Sheepmeats Council to convince the Middle East countries of the genuine desire of Australia to develop a mutually satisfactory live sheep trade."We had also advised the Government of our support for the recall of Doug Anthony to act as an "Honest Broker" on this festering issue as he was the last Australian Minister to show any deep interest in the trade and general relations between Australia and the Arab countries, and the last Minister to be highly regarded in the Arab world.Γ CO>v;MO,NWEA.-Ti-iENDS 7 JANUARY 1991 PARLIAMENTARY LIBRARYM iC AH| Parliament House, Canberra, A.C.T., 2600 For further information phone 062 /7 7 4 1 9 3 1 I BRUCE LLOY D
