DAWKINS' CRUDE UNEMPLOYMENT PLOY DESERVES THE SACK

The Employment Minister, Mr John Dawkins, should be sacked for blatantly and dishonestly exploiting the unemployment issue to advance the leadership prosects of Paul Keating.

Selective leaking by Mr Dawkins to Saturday newspapers painted him as valiantly trying to win more Budget funds for the unemployed.

In today's press a counterleak from the Hawke forces revealed the exact opposite. Mr Dawkins ran dead on his own Department's submission. He didn't try to get more money for the unemployed after all.

This orgy of ministerial leaking, initiated by the Employment Minister, on such a sensitive human issue is an insult to the almost one million unemployed in Australia.

It shows the desperate, poisonous depth to which the Hawke/Keating leadership battle has descended.

I don't condemn Mr Dawkins for failing to support additional spending on dubious job creation schemes.

I do however condemn him and his pro-Keating colleagues for playing with the unemployment issue to damage the Prime Minister.

If "old jellyback" had any residual leadership strength he would sack his treacherous Employment Minister. Mr Dawkins has had plenty of warnings.
