CONSCRIPTION - HAWKE SHOWS HIS TRUE COLOURS

The Prime Minister's attack today over the issue of conscription is another cheap political stunt.

It again shows the true measure of the man.

The Opposition has given total bi-partisan support to Australia's commitment to the Gulf War.

Moreover, I have clearly stated our opposition to conscription both before and after Mr Fischer expressed his personal views on the issue.

Yet the Prime Minister still seeks to take a cheap political shot and capitalise on the concerns of some in the electorate on this issue.

Some issues are above politics. Unfortunately, it seems that virtually nothing is too low for the Prime Minister.

His whole Government has been based on dishonesty, deliberate misrepresentation and policy inactivity.

The country needs leadership. On the recession. On w ool. On industry policy. On labour market reform. On structural reform.

The country does not need a Prime Minister who plays cheap

political games at a time of crisis simply to divert attention from his failures on these and other issues.
