Ian McLachlan

Shadow M inister for Industry and Commerce

Toyota's decision to build a new manufacturing plant in Australia was very welcome news, the Shadow Minister for Industry and Commerce, Ian McLachlan, said today.

'Following Holden's recent announcement of its investment plans, Toyota's announcement today demonstrates just how determined the car companies are to make the Australian industry world competitive.

'Their commitment deserves support from all governments and by far the best support would be acceleration of much-needed economy-wide structural reforms.'

Mr McLachlan said that the most important improvement for the industry would be industrial relations reform to promote better working relationships and mutual understanding within the enterprise.

'Good employee relations are the key to productivity and prosperity for everyone involved.

'No doubt this was an important consideration in Toyota's decision to establish a greenflelds site.

'Of course, there should be no differentiation by the unions between greenfield and existing enterprises.

'Toyota like so many other companies in Australia has accepted the challenge of becoming more competitive. It is demonstrating its commitment to this country's future.'
