JOINT MEDIA STATEMENT BY DR JOHN HEWSON MP LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION AND MR TIM FISCHER MP LEADER OF THE NATIONAL PARTY

PROPOSED REDISTRIBUTION OF FEDERAL ELECTORAL BOUNDARIES IN NEW SOUTH WALES

The Leader of the Opposition, John Hewson, and the Leader of the National Party, Tim Fischer, both New South Wales Members, said today that the provisional maps released today by the Electoral Commission would be carefully examined by the Liberal and National Parties before a decision was made as to whether to

lodge any objection.

It is obvious that this is a major redistribution, far more significant than had been anticipated by either side and

therefore needs to be carefully scrutinised and analysed.

Dr Hewson and Mr Fischer emphasised that the boundaries are provisional and would be the subject of the normal appeal process and possible further adjustment.

However, the Coalition is committed to working as a team to ensure that we maximise our vote against the ALP in New South Wales and increase our number of seats in the State.
