MEDIA RELEASE Federal Member for Fairer, Leader of the National Party of Australia, Shadow Minister for Energy and Resources

EMBARGO 10.00AM SATURDAY 2 NOVEMBER, 1991 TASMANIA STALEMENT ON RESOURCES BASS STRAIT ELECTRICITY CABLE ESSENTIAL PREMIERS' CONFERENCE PERTH MUST CONSIDER BASSLINK

Within less than a decade, Oaklands Electricity Power from southern NSW could be rippling through the Victorian Grid then under Bass Strait to supply the Tasmanian Base Load.

Shadow Minister for Energy and Resources and Leader of the National Party, Tim Fischer, MP, said this today when speaking at the Indi/Murray Regional Conference of the National Party in Wangaratta.

'Now that the State Resources Security legislation in Tasmania has been destroyed and a stalemate applies, Tasmania needs a proper electricity base more urgently than ever before.

Ά recent report, yet to be released, indicates that a 300 megawatt electricity cable with an approximate cost of $400 million linking Gippsland with Tasmania would do much to stop the drift of Tasmania towards a cottage economy with candle power.

'Indeed, building Basslink from Gippsland to Tasmania would greatly enhance the establishment of the National Electricity Grid involving Qld, NSW, Vic, SA and Tasmania. Likewise a link between NSW and Victoria through the Snowy Mountains Scheme has resulted in NSW supplying Victoria with 300 megawatts on a contractual basis.

'Private enterprise power stations utilised in a flexible National Electricity Grid breaks down the State 'fiefdom' mentality and greatly improves energy efficiency is the correct way forward.

Ί might add if the Oaklands Coalfired Power Station proceeds just north of Wangaratta, it would greatly enhance the economy of the local region and provide additional capacity to the linkage between NSW and victoria.

Mr Fischer added that a 4 x 660 megawatt Coalfired Base Load Power Station was being considered on the large deposits of coal at Oaklands and that the Premiers' Conference in Perth should further consider the progress with establishing a National Electricity Grid which has bi-partisan support and

has been recommended in various reports.
