T im Fischer mp Federal Member for Farrer

Leader of the National Party of Australia

Shadow Minister for Energy and Resources

Comments by Senator Button today saying that the removal of Payroll Tax and Federal Fuel Excise, if affirmed in the Package, will be beneficial, are most welcomed. Federal Leader of the National Party, Tim Fischer, said this today on the eve of the official launch of the Coalition Tax Reform Package.

"Once again, Senator Button has given a dose of honesty to comments from the Labor Government. But on this occasion he has it right!

"To be fair, Senator Button put in some qualifications but those qualifications will be affectively dealt with by the Leader of the Opposition, John Hewson, tomorrow in launching the details of the Package.

"It is a tremendous Package which will greatly reduce the tyranny of distance and totally justifies staying the course on the GST throughout the last year.

"I take this opportunity to publicly salute the work of John Hewson and Peter Reith and all involved, including the staff for successfully completing the presentation of the Package to Shadow Cabinet and the Joint Party Meeting and getting it ready in time for the 21 November launch", Mr Fischer added.

Ends 20 November 1991
