Wool tax levy of 15%: pure thuggery

Tim Fischer mp Federal Member for Farrer

Leader of the National Party of Australia

Shadow Minister for Energy and Resources

Death knell for many wool growers, particularly in Western Queensland

Speaking in Brisbane, Federal Leader of the National Party, Tim Fischer, has described the 15% wool tax levy in the Kerin package as thuggery which will wreck many.

"The levy does not have to be as high as 15%; under the

Coalition's responsible approach it could be considerably lower than 10%," Mr Fischer said.

"The levy level is vital. It is the bottom line for wool growers and as the Shadow Minister for Primary Industry and Deputy Leader of the National Party, Bruce Lloyd, says, 8% could have been responsibly adopted.

"Western Queensland and western New South Wales wool growers, along with many others, will be financially decimated, especially those doing battle with bank managers and with a major drought.

"There now seems to be an agenda out of Canberra to belt the bush during a savage rural economic recession which will lead to permanent loss of farming populations and skilled rural workers.

"Having just travelled through the Riverina to Roxby Downs in South Australia, and then to Queensland, I warn that many wool growers, and farmers generally, are on a knife edge and face their worst financial year ever.

Mr Fischer said that if the Kerin 15% package was the best that bureaucrats from ABARE, DPIE, AWC and the IWS could produce, then perhaps a 15% reduction in the size and salaries of the bureaucracy was needed.
