JOINT STATEMENT: TIM FISCHER MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR ENERGY & RESOURCES LEADER OF THE NATIONAL PARTY

FRED CHANEY MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

MIKE WOOLDRIDGE MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS

Federal Shadow Cabinet, meeting in Cairns today, has confirmed its policy to endorse mining at Coronation Hill. As a next step the Government should remove all impediments immediately to allow negotiations between the Coronation Hill Joint Venturers and the Jawoyn people to proceed forthwith.

This project has the potential to create 630 new jobs and bring in much needed export income.

The report by the Resource Assessment Commission, in particular, has demonstrated that the project can be carried out with no significant environmental damage.

The Kakadu Conservation Zone has been mined before without adverse effect on the environmental values of the Kakadu National Park downstream from those mines.

With proper environmental controls, like those proposed by the Joint Venturers, we can have the benefit of the development without environmental harm.

The Coalition is concerned that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Heritage Protection Act is being used to lock up large areas of land in spite of the explicit undertaking in the

Minister's Second Reading speech (Mr Holding) that this was not the intention of the Act and that it would not be administered in this manner.

The Shadow Cabinet decision, reaffirming existing Liberal and National Party policy on Coronation Hill, was taken after consideration of recently released reports including that of the Resource Assessment Commission.
