AUSTRALIA MISSES RAIL DEADLINE

NATIONAL RAIL FREIGHT CORPORATION DELAY A DISGRACE - FISCHER

The National Rail Freight Corporation should have been

inaugurated today (30 June) but petty politics has derailed any real progress.

This was said by Federal Leader of the National Party Tim Fischer in marking the fact that there is continued wrangling between States over the location of the Rail Freight Corporation's Headquarters.

Mr Fischer was speaking during a visit to Cania Gorge near Monto.

Last century Australian States couldn't make up their minds over a single gauge for all Australian railways and ever since, the five mainland systems have been very jealous of each other.

As a consequence we are saddled with a system which works against efficient trade between states and makes the Australian Nation a laughing stock to other countries who benefit from a single rail system.

"Given that there is the National standard gauge rail link between Western Australia and the Eastern States surely any proposal to make the National System more efficient and effective is the way to go.

State Premiers and Ministers for Transport must put aside their petty jealousies and work towards establishing a fully integrated National rail freight system.

Mr Fischer said the start up date for the New National Rail

Freight Corporation has now been put back to 1 October 1991, but may slip further and this would be a tragedy.

ENDS 30 June 1991
