"HANDS OFF RMIT": KEMP

"The Federal and State Governments must not take any action that would damage RMIT", Dr David Kemp, the Federal Shadow Minister for Education said today.

Last night the Council of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology decided to withdraw from the Victoria University of Technology.

Dr. Kemp said the Federal and State Labor Ministers had made threats to cut RMIT's student numbers and up to $30 million in funding.

"The withdrawal of RMIT from the Victoria University of

Technology is a damning indictment of the mismanagement of the amalgamations process by the Federal and State Governments", Dr. Kemp said.

"The two Governments have failed to provide a framework for a successful new institution, and now they are threatening to punish RMIT because it is standing up for educational standards".

"RMIT is an outstanding institution attracting the loyalties of thousands of staff and students, past and present. It is an integral part of higher education in Victoria, and it would be madness for the Government to do anything other than build on

this tradition of excellence."

"Any attempt to punish RMIT will be strongly resisted by the Opposition. The Liberal/National Coalition accepts the right of RMIT to continue to exist as autonomous institution and in government would support it accordingly", Dr. Kemp said.
