MEDIA RELEASE

THE SENATE

SENATOR PETER DURACK, Q C Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Senate

Shadow Minister for Defence

DEMOCRATS FOOL· THEMSELVES ABOUT GOLF — DURACK

In her speech to the Senate on the Gulf crisis, Janet Powell, the Leader of the Australian Democrats, said on three occasions that the Democrats had the support of a majority of the Australian people.

This contrasts with a media release put out the same day by

Democrat Senator Paul McLean saying that "polls are now showing that 30 percent of Australians do not want ... to be involved in w a r ."

In fact, both Senators Powell and McLean are wrong. The

'Newspoll' results printed in today's Australian show that some 75 percent of Australians support military action against Iraq, and that 69 percent are in favour of Australian military

participation.

It is bad enough that the Democrats presume to lecture us all from the moral high ground.

However, it is totally inaccurate for them to imagine, as Janet Powell does, that they do so with the support of anything other than a small minority of Australians.

Unlike the Democrats, most Australians recognise fundamental injustice, and know that there are times when military action will be needed to deal with it.

The poll figures in today's Australian should make the Democrats pause before they again claim to be speaking for the majority.
