MEDIA RELEASE

THE SENATE

SENATOR PETER DURACK, Q C Deputy Leader o f the Opposition in the Senate

Shadow Minister for Defence

AN OLD DEFENCE POLICY FOR A NEW WORT.D ORDER

Senator Ray is rightly worried by the Opposition's defence review.

Why else would he spend the bulk of his National Press Club

speech attacking the Opposition's review rather than saying how Labor proposes to deal with the changed strategic environment?

After four years of unprecedented change in global and regional security, Senator Ray maintains that the 1987 Defence White Paper is still relevant to the post-cold war world.

This is nonsense. Like any other document, the White Paper needs to be updated to deal with current developments.

I repeat my call for Senator Ray to release appropriately

declassified versions of Australia's Strategic Priorities in the 1990s, and the Force Structure Review, when it is produced.

Unlike the Government the Opposition is committed to a public and thorough review of defence policy.

Senator Ray's unwillingness to deal with our changing strategic environment and his secretive approach to defence policy makes for a very uninspiring response to some very major international security developments.
