BTT.NF.V CTTR HTS FACTS WRONG ON RESERVES — DURACK

Mr Gordon Bilney made a $50 million mistake yesterday when he and Senator Ray released the Force Structure Review.

His Media Release of yesterday (No 74/91) confuses the existing Reserves with the new Ready Reserves.

It says that the Ready Reserve "in no way diminishes the existing Reserves who have been allocated an additional $50 million in funding for re-equipment."

In fact, the Force Structure Review (on page 46) shows that the $50 million equipment allocation is for the Ready Reserve not the existing Reserve.

The Shadow Minister for Defence, Senator Peter Durack, said that Mr Bilney's confusion highlighted two points.

First, the Government itself is confused about the scheme, which has not been clearly thought through.

Second, nothing has been done to remedy the problems of the existing Reserve which does not have the equipment it needs, or the necessary access to training opportunities.

Senator Durack said that the Opposition doubts that the Ready Reserve scheme will work.

More resources should be devoted to providing the existing Reserve with the equipment and training it needs.

Either way, Mr Bilney should check his facts before making a major defence statement.
