RAY BRAITHWAITE, M.M.R. FEDERAL MEMBER FOR DAWSON SHADOW MINISTER FOR COMMUNITY SERVICES AND AGED CAKE

PARLIAMENT OF AUSTRALIA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

WHAT SOCIAL JUSTICE, MR HOWE?

Mr Ray Braithwaite, Shadow Minister for Community Services and Aged, today questioned the Goverenment's commitment to social justice for people with disabilities.

'When will the Minister for Health, Housing and Community

Services spell out clearly whether he intends to continue to fund sheltered workshops after 30 June 1992?', asked Mr Braithwaite.

'Why didn't the Minister in his statement on Social Justice for People with Disabilities say something about the Government's intentions on sheltered workshops?'

Parents of disabled children are desperately worried about what will happen to their children after 30 June next year.

Is this social justice?

Mr Braithwaite also asked the Minister to come clean and admit that there is insufficient money to fund all the new services approved under the Disability Services Act for all people with disabilities.

'Some people are getting a Rolls Royce service, while others are getting n one. Is this social justice?',

'Why· doesn't the Minister extend the transition date of the Disability Services Act to 1997?'

Mr Braithwaite also asked the Minister to give details of the savings that would be made by transferring the responsibility of accommodation services for people with disabilities to the States.

'Will the Minister also give an assurance that any savings made will go to services for people with disabilities', said the Shadow Minister.

People with disabilities deserve social justice in practice, not just in words, said Mr Braithwaite.
