JULIAN BEALE, M.H.R. Federal Mem ber for Bruce

Acting Shadow Minister for Communications

MEDIA RELEASE

January 9, 1991

BKA2LKY SHOULD ASSURE ΤΚΓ.ΚΓΟΜ KKIATTVES

Communications Minister, Kim Beasley, should assure relatives of Telecom workers that they are secure in Saudi Arabia.

Relatives and Telecom unions have been urging the withdrawal of all Telecom workers and dependants.

The Opposition first drew attention to possible dangers to Australians employed in Saudi Arabia more than a week ago.

Mr. Beazley has maintained an embarrassed silence on the issue.

If hostilities break out it will be difficult for Telecom to ensure that there are sufficient aeroplane seats available to fly its workers to safety.

Many flights to and from the Middle East have now been cancelled.

The military actions of the tyrant of Iraq are entirely

unpredictable.

He has shown in the past no hesitation in attacking and gassing civilian targets.

Mr. Beazley must go public and assure Australia that its citizens in Saudia Arabia are secure.
