NEWS RELEASE Hon. Neil Brown QC, MP Shadow Minister for Communications

HON. NEIL BROWN - RETIREMENT FROM PARLIAMENT

I have written tcx the Speaker of the House of

Representatives today advising him that I am retiring from the Parliament as from today.

I have reached this decision after long and careful consideration.

I was first elected in 1969 and have had an active role as a Minister, Shadow Minister and Deputy Leader of the Opposition. After this lengthy period of office, I now feel that the

Electorate and the Parliamentary Liberal Party would be better

served by having another person represent the Electorate of

Menzies. I am confident that the Coalition Parties will win

Government at the next election and my resignation will give a

new Shadow Minister adequate time to prepare for Government.

I will be returning to my practice as a Barrister in Melbourne.

It has been a pleasure and an honour to represent the people

of Menzies and, prior to that, the people of Diamond Valley.

I am particularly proud to have had a part in drawing the

Opposition's Industrial Relations, Telecommunications and Law and Justice policies which have been major reforms in these areas.

I extend my very best wishes to Dr. Hews on, Mr. Fischer and

the Liberal and National Parties and express ray confidence in their future success. r··... ....... ....
