LIBERAL SENATOR FOR QUEENSLAND

SHADOW MINISTER FOR ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND THE A.C.T.

GOVERNMENT CONDEMNED FOR IGNORING NATIONAL FLAG DAY

The Australian Government must be condemned for completely ignoring the 90th anniversary of the birth of the Australian National Flag, Senator Warwick Parer, Shadow Minister for Administrative Services said today.

Senator Parer said that the anniversary was met with a wall of silence and disinterest from the Government.

Senator Parer said it was a day of great historic significance for all Australians that on 3rd September, 1901 in the presence of Australia's first Prime Minister, Sir Edmond Barton, the Blue Ensign, Australia's National Flag was raised by the Countess of Hopetoun, wife of Australia's first Governor-General.

This flag was chosen after a world-wide competition which attracted 32,000 entries, with selection by a panel of seven Australian judges. The flag has served us for 90 years, however, it is under threat from moves within the Hawke Labor Government to have it scrapped.

The Coalition firmly believes that the Australian National Flag should remain in its present form and should be protected by appropriate legislation the Coalition has sought to put in place. The flag should only be changed with the consent of a majority of the Australian population in a national referendum.
