RURAL ADJUSTMENT SCHEME MINISTERS MEET

John Kerin, Minister for Primary Industries and Energy, met with State and Northern Territory Ministers responsible for the management and administration of the Rural Adjustment Scheme (RAS) in Canberra today.

The meeting reviewed the effect of the current rural downturn, the resulting increasing pressures on the RAS and the most effective means by which farmers could be assisted through the RAS.

The Ministers agreed that further work is necessary to evaluate the case that this rural downturn is "different" from previous downturns and that the Rural Adjustment Scheme (RAS) might therefore need amendment.

The States failed to agree with Commonwealth proposals in relation to provision of carry-on funding under Part B and Debt Reconstruction with Interest Subsidy (DRIS).

Mr Kerin confirmed the Commonwealth commitment to review Part A funding requirements later this year.

RAS Ministers will meet again to discuss this and the implications of the recently announced Commonwealth Drought Policy before the end of June.
