MINISTER FOR PRIMARY INDUSTRIES AND ENERGY JOHN KERIN M.P. CANBERRA

DPIE91/159K 4 June 1991

NEW RURAL COUNSELLING SERVICES FOR NSW, SA & VIC

New Rural Counselling Services in New South Wales and South Australia and the appointment of a second rural counsellor in the Wimmera have been approved by the Minister for Primary Industries & Energy, John Kerin.

New rural counselling services in Cooma, NSW, and Clare, SA, will provide support for farmers in the Monaro region and the mid/upper north of South Australia who are facing severe financial difficulties due to the recent decline in commodity

prices.

• The need has been demonstrated in both areas and these appointments fill a gap in the current network of rural counsellors,' Mr Kerin said.

'Appointment of a second rural counsellor for the Wimmera Fightback Committee based at Horsham, Victoria, is also necessary to meet the growing demand for services.

'The demand for assistance from the present counsellor has become so great that it has not been possible to maintain adequate servicing for over 80 clients,' Mr Kerin said.

The Government recently approved increased funding for rural counselling of up to $2.6 million in 1991-92 and for the subsequent two years. This will provide for a doubling of the present number of counsellors, enabling up to 60 to be employed

if necessary.

Through the Rural Counselling Program, farming families are able to obtain free financial and associated personal counselling on issues affecting the operation of the farm.

Counsellors must be trained in farm financial analysis and be familiar with State and Commonwealth assistance programs as well as other community services available to rural families.
