MEAT RESEARCH CORPORATION CHAIRPERSON APPOINTED

The M inister for Prim ary Industries and Energy, Mr Simon Crean, today announced the appointment of Dr Nigel Monteith as chairperson of the M eat Research Corporation. -

Mr Crean said he was pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr Monteith for a further term welcoming his experience as a research and development m anager with extensive international experience.

Dr M onteith has served as Chairman of the Australian Meat and Live-stock Research and Development Corporation since August 1988. The A ustralian Meat and Live-stock Research and Development Corporation (AMLRDC) became the Meat Research Corporation (MRC) on July 1, 1991.

The MRC is the peak research body for the meat and livestock industry and is jointly funded by the industry and the Commonwealth Government.

The m ain direction of research being considered by the MRC is how to enhance both the profitability and sustainability of the grazing industries through processing efficiency, value-adding and developing the most effective means of

m arketing products to meet consumer requirements.

Mr Crean said Dr Monteith, as chairperson of the AMLRDC, provided the Corporation with effective leadership and ensured th at the Corporation m et industry research objectives and aspirations.

Dr M onteith is currently Executive Chairman of the A ustralian Agricultural Consulting and Management Company, having joined the organisation from the World Bank in June 1980.

Dr M onteith has a distinguished record, with some 35 years full-time involvement in research and development in many overseas countries, particularly Latin America, the Middle E ast and South Pacific. His specialist interest is land use, soil fertility, watershed management, irrigation and rainfall agronomy.
