Status of women ministers meet in Melbourne

NEWS RELEASE The Hon Wendy Fatin MR Minister for Local Government Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Status of Women

The Premier of Victoria, Ms Joan Kimer, will chair the second annual conference of Ministers for the Status of Women in Melbourne tomorrow.

The meeting will include all Ministers for Women’s Affairs or their representatives from the Commonwealth and all States and Territories.

The Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Status of Women, the Hon Wendy Fatin MP, will represent the Commonwealth.

The conference will consider an issues paper on the National Committee on Violence Against Women recommending reforms concerning preventative detention, confiscation of firearms and other dangerous weapons and cancellation of custody and access in cases involving violent offenders subject to domestic violence protection orders.

Other reports and issues to be raised at the conference include Government actions relating to workers with family responsibilities, policies for Aboriginal and Islander women, women and economic equality and women and structural adjustment, the Early

Detection of Breast Cancer Program and the National Non English Speaking Background Women’s Health Strategy launched by Ms Fatin this month.

The media is invited to the official opening of the conference from 9.30am to about 9.45am in the Cabinet Room, 1st Floor, 1 Treasury Place.

Ms Fatin and Ms Kimer will hold a press conference at 2pm in the TV room, 1st floor, 1 Treasury Place.
