$1.3 MILLION IN FEDERAL GRANTS FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Fifty six councils and local government organisations throughout Australia will receive Federal Government grants totalling nearly $1.3 million, the Federal Minister for Local Government, the Hon Wendy Fatin announced today.

The grants, made through the Local Government Development Program (LGDP) are for innovative projects which help implement national goals at the local level.

Successful projects in both urban and rural areas include:

Guidelines for the redevelopment of office or warehouse space into inner city housing in Newcastle, NSW. The Newcastle City Council will receive $15,000 for the project, which will also develop strategies for other councils.

The Municipal Officers Association, National Office, will receive $35,000 for a study of how councils apply the training guarantee and how it is linked with Equal Employment Opportunity for women and other council workers.

An economic independence strategy for remote Aboriginal communities in Queensland’s Aurukun Shire. The shire’s $35,000 grant will investigate how to broaden its local economic base by developing viable enterprises.

The appointment of an Environmental Management Coordinator by the Western Australian Municipal Association. This position, with $30,000 in Federal funding, will facilitate positive Local Government responses to local environmental issues.

An economic and environmental management study by the Esperance Municipality of Tasmania’s Southern Forest, South West Wilderness and Hastings Cave. It will receive $32,000.

Other projects funded under the program for each State are attached.

"Programs such as the LGDP help councils and other Local Government organisations make changes at the local level which can effectively implement national objectives." Ms Fatin said.

"Projects like these enhance their ability to respond to change, improve service delivery and management practices and contribute to the achievement of national social and economic goals, as well as a better local environment.

"There were 450 applications for LGDP grants in 1990-1991, and it would have cost $14 million to fund them all. The competition was very keen, and the successful applicants are to be commended on the high quality of their submissions."

Since the program began in 1983-1984, about 500 councils and related organisations have received more than $21 million in Federal funding.
