MINISTER FOR JUSTICE AND CONSUMER AFFAIRS SENATOR MICHAEL TATE MEDIA RELEASE

25 November 1991

EXERCISE CYCLES

The Minister for Justice and Consumer Affairs, Senator Michael Tate, today warned consumers to be careful when using exercise cycles around young children. .

The Minister issued the warning after figures released by the National Injury Surveillance Unit (NISU) revealed 41 cases of injury to children caused by exercise cycles. The injuries occurred when fingers or limbs were caught in the spokes and

sprockets of exercise bikes not fitted with safety guards.

"Recently manufactured exercise cycles have safety features built in, but in the past, many have been supplied without wheel and sprocket guards.

"The Federal Bureau of Consumer Affairs will survey new exercise bikes to see if there are safety problems with those currently available. And in the future, suppliers may be required to ensure exercise bikes are fitted with approved safety guards on wheels, chains and sprockets", Senator Tate said.
