STANDARDS AUSTRALIA TO RUN NEW-LOOK DESIGN AWARDS

Standards Australia is to take over the new-look Australian Design Awards, the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce, Senator John Button, announced today.

The Australian Design Council will hand over the awards to Standards Australia under an agreement which comes into effect today.

Senator Button said Standards Australia would have the resources to further develop the awards which he said had helped raise the design consciousness of Australian manufacturers.

"In the past, the awards have been made to individual manufacturers for design excellence," the Minister said.

"In future they also will be awarded to the principal designer of the winning project."

Senator Button said Standards Australia provided an independent forum for the setting of national standards as well as quality assurance services for industry and government.

"The Australian Design Awards have provided an incentive to Australian manufacturers to achieve excellence in design," he said.

The work of Standards Australia has also helped underpin a steady improvement in design.

"Bringing the awards and Standards Australia together will make a further contribution to the development of internationally competitive manufacturing and service industries."

Senator Button said he was looking forward to working with Standards Australia and to the presentation of the first of the new-look awards later this year.
