MINISTERS ANNOUNCE REVIEW OF COMPUTING STUDIES AND ■ _______Τ Η Ρ Π Ρ Μ Α Τ Τ D M Τ’ΤΥ ΓΤ Ρ & Τ ΤΠ Μ ______________________

The Federal Government has established a major review of computing studies and information sciences education in higher education institutions.

Higher Education and Employment Services Minister, Peter Baldwin, and Industry, Technology,and Commerce Minister, Senator John Button, said today the review was examining the provision of courses in computing studies and information

sciences.

"It is considering the effectiveness of current arrangements in meeting the present and likely future needs of the economy and the labour market for suitably qualified computing professionals," they said.

"It is also addressing the needs of other occupational categories requiring graduates with skills in computing and information science.

"The review, which started on February 18, is expected,to take nine months."

The review is required to produce a report, which will address a range of issues including measures to improve the quality of teaching and learning of computing studies and information sciences. *

The report will also look at ways of encouraging successful co-operation and links between higher education and business/industry.

The review, foreshadowed in the 1988 higher education White Paper, is being jointly funded by the Department of Employment, Education and Training, the Department of Industry, Technology and Commerce, and the information industry.

The review is being conducted by a panel of industry and higher education representatives, chaired by Mr Hugh Hudson.

Other panel members are:

Professor Andrew Lister, Department of Computer Science, University of Queensland;

Professor Fred Symons, Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, Monash University;

Ms Jenny Edwards, Senior Lecturer, School of Computing Sciences, University of Technology, Sydney;

Mr Phil Singleton, Director, Phil Singleton Research Pty Ltd;

Mr John Armstrong, Chief Manager, Applications Systems Development, Westpac and; ;

Mr Rod Smith, Acting Director, Western Australian Department of Information Technology.

The review secretariat will be based in Canberra at the Australian National University.
