M INISTER ANNOUNCES REVIEW OF NATIONAL SPACE PROGRAM

A n Expert Panel has been appointed by the A ustralian Space Board to review the N ational Space Program , the M inister for Industry, Technology an d Com m erce, Senator John Button, announced today. This Review is in accordance w ith the G overnm ent's 1988 funding decision w hich required the A ustralian Space Board to review the Program in th e second half of

1991-92.

Senator Button said the review w ould focus on:

• assessing the Program against its objectives, including actual an d potential direct and indirect benefits;

• the relevance of the Program 's activities in m eeting its objectives; an d

• assessing the appropriateness of the current space policy an d program to m eet A ustralia's future space indu stry developm ent needs, an d assessing the access to space goods and services.

"The Panel w ill deliver recom m endations on the future directions of the Program to the A ustralian Space Board by 15 June 1992," Senator Button said.

The Panel consists of:

• M r Jack C urtis (Panel C hairm an), C hairm an, N orTel A ustralia Pty Ltd ;

• Professor Roy Gibson, form er D irector-G eneral of the E uropean Space Agency; and

• D r Lou Davies, Em eritus Professor of Electrical Engineering at the U niversity of N ew South W ales.

"The m em bers of the Panel bring together the com m ercial, research, technical, m arketing and international expertise needed to un d ertak e a thorough review of the Program ," Senator B utton said.

As p art of the Panel's review process, the B ureau of Industry Economics . (BIE) w ill undertake an independent econom ic evaluation of th e Program , including an assessm ent of the Program 's perform ance to date.

An im portant p a rt of the review w ill be consultations w ith industry, the research com m unity an d other interested parties. The Panel, in conjunction w ith the BIE, is calling for subm issions u n til 9 D ecem ber 1991.

"This should result in an authoritative rep o rt on the perform ance of the N ational Space Program to assist in determ ining future A ustralian space- related activities," Senator Button said.
