SHIRE OF HINCHINBROOK TAKES OVER FULL AERODROME MANAGEMENT

The Shire of Hinchinbrook assumed full management of Ingham Aerodrome on Queensland's North Coast today in return for a Commonwealth grant of $87,518.

A cheque was presented yesterday to the Council by the Federal Member for Kennedy, Rob Hulls, on behalf of the Minister for Shipping and Aviation Support, Senator Bob Collins.

Of the once-only Commonwealth grant, $24,518 will be spent on completing a reseal of the runway, taxiway and apron.

Announcing the move, the Minister for Shipping and Aviation Support, Senator Bob Collins, said the remaining $63,000 represented a social benefit subsidy being provided by the Commonwealth.

"The subsidy is for investment and expenditure by the council on the future maintenance of the aerodrome, and is based on 25 per cent of the average annual maintenance grants paid by the Commonwealth under the Aerodrome Local

Ownership Plan over the past 12 years," Senator Collins said.

"The aerodrome is owned by the council already, and this latest development reflects the Government's view that local aerodromes can be more effectively run under total management and operation of the communities they serve.

"Communities such as the Shire of Hinchinbrook are best placed to maintain and develop their aerodromes consistent ’ with local needs and aspirations.

"I congratulate the Shire Council on making this commitment, and wish the council well in operating the aerodrome to better serve local community needs."
