TRANSCRIPT OF DOORSTOP, AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF SPORT, CANBERRA, 19 JANUARY 1991

E & OE - PROOF ONLY

JOURNALIST: Prime Minister, how long do you believe Israel's resolve can hold in the face of such provocation by Iraq?

PM: I don't know the answer to that question but I repeat what I said yesterday that I would hope that despite all the provocation that Israel will refrain from action because I

think in the interests of everyone concerned that is most likely to produce the best result.

JOURNALIST: What assessment have you received of what might be - what the future might hold in terms of future attacks by Iraq? What is their capacity, do you know?

PM: Well I'm not going to give you the answer to that question. I know facts which are relevant to that in regard to the number of mobile launchers and the number of missiles they've got. It wouldn't be appropriate for me to answer that question.

JOURNALIST: How long will Iraqi diplomats be allowed to stay in Australia?

PM: We haven' t given any thought to asking them to leave but there will be limitations, of course, on how far they can move.

JOURNALIST: Has there been a threat to our Embassy in Thailand, Mr Hawke?

PM: Yes we have a report of a threat to that but we've done all that we can to alert the authorities there and to undertake the appropriate protection.
