CHEAPER AVGAS FOR GENERAL AVIATION INDUSTRY

The Federal Government announced today a one cent reduction in the cost of a litre of aviation gasoline (avgas). The Minister for Shipping and Aviation, Senator Bob Collins, said the reduction would take place from 7 May.

Senator Collins said the Federal Government was committed to reducing the duty on . avgas as part of a program in which Commonwealth-owned aerodromes were transferred to local ownership and other aerodromes withdrew from the Aerodrome Local Ownership Plan.

The reduction in excise follows the introduction into Parliament yesterday of a Bill to amend the Aviation Fuel Revenues (Special Appropriation) Act 1988 to enable reductions to the avgas duty rate while preserving the Civil Aviation Authority's present revenue entitlements under the legislation.

"A further lc reduction in avgas duty will take place when the combined number of Commonwealth and ALOP aerodromes is reduced to 100, which is expected to be around September 1992", Senator Collins said.

The final portion of the duty, related to the aerodrome cost-recovery program, is scheduled to be removed in June 1993 when the aerodrome transfer and withdrawal process is expected to be completed.

"We have been able to advance the timetable for phasing out avgas duty because of the One Nation initiative to provide $27.5 million to accelerate the aerodrome transfer and withdrawal program.

"Cost recovery of services provided by the CAA to avgas operators will not be affected by the reductions and industry will continue to gain full credit for all duty paid.

"The duty reductions are an example of tangible benefits flowing to the general aviation industry from the Federal Government's aviation reforms, in particular its policy of aerodrome local ownership", Senator Collins said.
