PRESS no . 25- TREASURER RELEASE EMBARGO

STATEMENT B Y THE TREASURER. PAUL KEATING. M P

NEW TAXATION OFFICE FOR HURSTVILLE, NSW

I am today announcing the final stage in the decentralisation of the Australian Taxation Office in New South Wales, with the establishment of a new office at Hurstville in Sydney.

The Hurstville office completes the process of relocating ATO offices away from the Sydney CBD to other areas within the state so that ATO services can be located closer to taxpayers, thereby meeting their needs more effectively.

The decentralisation strategy for NSW has already seen offices established or announced in Parramatta, Chatswood, Penrith, Bankstown, Newcastle and Albury-Wodonga. I announced yesterday that a new office will be established in the Blawarra to service the needs of that region. These offices are in addition to a continued, but smaller, Sydney CBD presence.

The Hurstville office will provide for a staff level of 600-660, and tenders will be sought for the provision of a building suited to the ATO’s requirements. It is anticipated that the building will be available for occupancy by mid 1993.

Taxpayers in the Hurstville region will benefit from easier access to the Taxation Office to discuss and resolve their taxation affairs. The new office will provide employment opportunities in the area, and also allow a significant number of existing ATO employees to work closer to home. ·

The Federal members for Barton and St George, Mr Gary Punch and Mr Stephen Dubois have warmly welcomed the ATO’s decision to locate in Hurstville, both in terms of the improved level of taxpayer services that will be provided and the significant contribution the office will make to the development of the Hurstville commercial sector.

Taxpayers affected by the change in arrangements will be advised prior to the opening of the new office.
