STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER ASSISTING THE TREASURER THE HON ROSS FREE, MP

DECLARATION OF HARBOUR TOWAGE CHARGES

The Minister Assisting the Treasurer, the Hon Ross Tree, MP, announced that he has declared towage operators in the six major Australian ports under the Prices Surveillance Act 1983.

The Prices Surveillance Authority (PSA) recommended declaration of towage operators in Sydney/Port Botany,, Melbourne, Fremantle, Brisbane, Newcastle and Adelaide in its report on its inquiry into harbour towage charges late last

year. That report found that there is a lack of competition in the industry, with towage services being provided, in the main, by monopolies.

Mr Free also indicated his agreement to the PSA’s recommendation that it monitor the prices charged by towage operators in other ports.
