NO TRUTH IN PARKER'S CLAIMS ON ROTHWELLS: CHANEY 47/91

At no stage did I ever support the Burke government's proposal to indemnify the National Australia Bank line of credit to Rothwells.

Nor did I attempt to persuade my State colleagues to support it.

Claims by former Deputy Premier Parker to the Western Australian Royal Commission yesterday that the indemnity had my backing are totally incorrect.

When I spoke to Barry MacKinnon by telephone on the day the government was trying to put together the rescue package I told him he should not touch it with a barge pole.

I made that statement on a loud-speaker phone so that I could speak to both Mr MacKinnon and Mr Tony Oates who was with Mr MacKinnon at that time. That is the only contact I had with Mr Oates on this matter.

The report of Mr Parker's evidence in today's Australian newspaper notes that I have previously denied this claim.

I will send a copy of this statement to the Royal Commissioners and if they believe it would assist their inquiries I would be quite happy to appear to give evidence on this matter.
