$550.000 FOR CLOSER UNIVERSITY LINKS WITH ASIA

Seven A ustralian universities will receive $549,000 in Federal Government grants to expand their links with research institutions in Asia.

Jo h n Dawkins, M inister for Employment, Education and Training, said it was im portant for A ustralia's universities to strengthen relationships with leading research institutions in Asia.

"Joint developments in research and technology increase our opportunities for economic growth and help cem ent our role in the international com m unity and especially in Asia".

The institutions receiving grants are:

Edith Cowan University ($35,000) La Trobe University ($76,000) Northern Territory University ($68,000) Royal M elbourne Institute of Technology ($92,000) University of New S outh Wales ($92,000) University of Q ueensland ($93,000) University of Technology, Sydney ($93,000)

The grants will enable the expansion of academic and research links in areas su ch as nuclear medicine, iron and steel production and applied aspects of high tem perature superconductors.

Co-operative research projects will be undertaken with Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia and China.

"Since 1990 the Federal Government h a s provided $2.1 million for 29 jo in t development projects", Mr Dawkins said.

"These projects are of m utual benefit to A ustralia and its neighbours. By building on com plem entary strengths they foster internationally competitive research in A ustralia and participating countries".

Mr Dawkins also announced two post-graduate scholarships worth $60,000 linked directly to the two research projects targeted a t Korea and Taiwan. Twenty-three scholarships worth $30,000 a year and tenable for three years have been funded since 1990.
