o c c u p a tio n a l health a n d safety grounds.

"During re c e n t visits to th e S potsw ood Q u a ran tin e C entre b oth my staff a n d 1 h a v e b e e n a p p alle d a t th e aggressive n atu re of m any of th e pit bulls being Im ported Into Australia.

"The Australian Q uarantine a n d Inspection Service (AQIS) has also b e e n ex trem ely c o n c e rn e d for th e sa fety of Its officers in handling th e s e d o g s, a n d will therefore b e a m e n d in g q u a ra n tin e protocols acc o rd in g ly .

"Importers a re now on notice th a t d o g s w hich a re d an g ero u s a n d u n m a n a g e a b le a n d which th erefo re p o se a th re a t to th e health a n d safety of Q uaran tin e Officers, will n o longer b e perm itted entry Into Australia".

Mr. Griffiths said th a t In addition to th e tem p o rary suspension of im ports o n o c c u p a tio n a l health a n d safety g ro u n d s, h e w ould b e

ta k in g a d e ta ile d proposal to Federal C a b in e t In th e n e a r future

seek in g a c o m p le te b a n on dogs o f th e ‘pit bull terrier type", unless prior a p p ro v a l Is given In Individual c a s e s w h e re a d o g has b e e n

certified n o t to b e dangerous or specifically b re d or train ed for fighting.
