COMMONWEALTH ASSISTANCE TO STATES FOR IMPROVED INFORMATION ON FORESTS

The Minister for Resources, Mr Alan Griffiths and the Minister for the Arts, Sport, the Environment, Tourism and Territories, Mrs Ros Kelly, today announced that arrangements had been concluded for

Commonwealth assistance to be provided to State forest management agencies for the development of regional scale datasets for inclusion in the National Forest Inventory (NFI).

The Ministers said that a total of $500,000 would be provided by the Commonwealth over the latter part of 1991 and early 1992 for the development of the datasets. Additional resources will be provided by State Governments.

Projects funded under the program are as follows:

Development of a dataset for the NSW North Coast/SE QId - data themes to include forest species, forest cover, land tenure, topography, fauna, flora, cultural heritage, geology. A study of private forests and rainforests. A study of oldgrowth forests in the East Gippsland region.

Development of regional scale information on remnant native forests in the south east. Development of regional scale information on remnant native forests in the south east. A study of lancewood forests in the centre of the

T erritory.

The Ministers said that the development of regional scale data sets is a key element of the NFI program. The datasets will provide detailed information on commercial, cultural and conservation attributes of forests which will complement the NFI's Continental Inventory. This information will provide the base for scientific analyses which will assist in the resolution of competing demands on our forests.
