The Federal Minister for Resources, Mr Alan Griffiths, today welcomed the announcement of four Cooperative Research Centres in the resources field.

The centres, four of 15 announced today by the Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Mr Simon Crean, would encourage closer links between research and industry, Mr Griffiths said.

The centres include:

CRC for Temperate Hardwood Forestry - Hobart

CRC for Mining Technology and Equipment - Brisbane

GK Williams CRC for Extractive Metallurgy - Melbourne

CRC for Australia's Petroleum Industry - Sydney, Melbourne

"The centres will provide industry with additional knowledge to increase Australia's competitiveness in the resources sector, and enhance the capacity to value add," Mr Griffiths said.

"In addition, the centres will address the challenge of the sustainable use and development of our natural resource wealth.

"For instance, the Temperate Hardwood Forestry CRC will help improve the quality and yield of hardwood plantations and forest management practices.

"This should mean less hardwood imports, less reliance on native hardwood0forests and improved pulp and paper-making technology.

"The petroleum industry CRC will help improve the success rate of oil and gas drilling in areas such as the Timor Sea, and of oil and gas recovery."

. Mr Griffiths said it was important that industry became involved in research, to best maximise Australia's competitiveness on a world scale.
