MINISTER FOR RESOURCES ALAN GRIFFITHS MP

16 April 1991 PIE91/102G , NATIONAL ENERGY MANAGEMENT :UM : A FIRST FOR AUSTRALIA People with a commitment to improved energy management, ranging from professional and technical experts to business managers, will gather in Melbourne in June for Australia's first National

Energy Management Forum, the Federal Minister for Resources, Mr Alan Griffiths, said today.

"The Forum will be a watershed of opinion and ideas on energy management in areas such as industry, buildings, transport and residences," Mr Griffiths said.

"This initiative will provide a major catalyst for the best practice in energy management to be analysed, leading to enhanced opportunities for application by producers and consumers of energy."

The Forum is particularly relevant to the twin Government objectives of achieving greater efficiency in the management of Australia's energy resources and tackling destructive greenhouse gas emissions.

The Minister said the Forum was one of a number of important energy initiatives being launched by the Federal Government in 1991. It will be directed at increasing awareness of the need for sound energy management practices and facilitating the uptake of relevant technologies.

"Our lifestyles can be enhanced, the comfort of our homes improved, our environment protected and the productivity of our industries increased," Mr Griffiths said.

"The Forum provides a unique opportunity for energy professionals and managers to address these needs from a nationwide perspective."

Staged at the World Congress Centre Melbourne, the Forum will be held over two days commencing Monday 24 June. A major feature will be the presentation of the 1990-91 National Energy Innovation Awards at a dinner on the evening of 24 June.

The Awards acknowledge outstanding achievements in energy research and development as well as energy management, and are widely recognised as a major accolade for the recipients.

A booklet on the Forum which includes registration details can be obtained by writing to the National Energy Management Forum, PO Box 46, Mitchell, ACT 2911 or by phoning 008-023723.
